Quick answer: Analytics engineer jobs are a smaller but well-paid niche in late 2026. One tracker counted 371 postings with a USD pay range at 232 companies and a median posted base of $164,200 on November 3, 2026 (Applystead). SQL appears in about 92% to 93% of postings and dbt in about 78% (Data Pay Index, Nov 2, 2026). Most roles want around 5 years of experience, so the realistic way in is usually from a data analyst or BI role, with a dbt project that proves you can model, test and document data.
This guide is for data analysts and BI developers who want to move into analytics engineering, analytics engineers who were laid off or want a better role, and OPT or H-1B candidates deciding whether this title is worth targeting. If you are weighing the more pipeline-heavy path, read our data engineer jobs guide next. If your resume is still written like an analyst resume, start with the data analyst resume guide and then come back.
What is an analytics engineer?
An analytics engineer sits between data engineering and analysis. dbt Labs, whose tool made the title popular, describes the job this way: a data analyst spends their time analyzing data, while an analytics engineer spends their time "transforming, testing, deploying, and documenting data" so other people can answer their own questions (dbt Labs, What is analytics engineering?).
In practice, that means you own the clean tables that dashboards, finance reports and AI tools read from. You write SQL models, add tests, manage them in Git, and define metrics so "revenue" or "active user" means the same thing everywhere.
Analytics engineer vs data analyst vs data engineer
"Analytics engineer vs data engineer" and "analytics engineer vs data analyst" are two of the most common Google suggestions for this title. Here is the practical difference.
| Data analyst | Analytics engineer | Data engineer | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main output | Analyses, dashboards, recommendations | Tested, documented data models and metric definitions | Pipelines, ingestion, data platform |
| Core tools | SQL, Excel, Tableau or Power BI | SQL, dbt, Git, a warehouse (Snowflake, BigQuery), a BI layer | Python, Spark, Airflow, Kafka, cloud services |
| Who uses the work | Business stakeholders | Analysts, BI tools, finance, AI features | Analytics engineers, data scientists, apps |
| Typical interview | SQL, case study, dashboard review | SQL, data modeling exercise, dbt and testing questions | SQL, Python, pipeline system design |
The overlap is real, and job titles are messy. A recent r/analytics thread asked whether the "data analyst" role is turning into "Data Analyst + ETL + Cloud + Data Engineering" (r/analytics). That drift is exactly why analytics engineering is a natural next step for many analysts.
Are analytics engineer jobs in demand in 2026?
Yes, but it is a niche title, and each tracker counts it differently. Treat each row below as a separate snapshot, not one combined total.
| Measure | Figure | Date | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Open postings that publish pay | 371 at 232 companies | Nov 3, 2026 | Applystead |
| Open analytics engineer postings | 336, which is 2.6% of the data and AI postings it tracks | Nov 2, 2026 | Data Pay Index |
| Live listings on a job board | 894 | Nov 3, 2026 | Teal |
| Live roles (includes UK and Europe) | 532, with 148 opened in the past week, at 235 employers | Nov 2, 2026 | Haystack |
| Share of all tech job ads (US and Canada) | 0.5% in September, vs 0.6% in June to August | Sept 2026 | Mettlespark |
Two things stand out. First, the title is small: about half a percent of tech job ads in Mettlespark's September sample, compared with 1.8% for site reliability engineers in the same dataset (Mettlespark SRE page). Second, many analytics engineering jobs are not called that. Employers also post them as "analytics engineer," "data analytics engineer," "BI engineer," "data modeler," "senior data analyst (dbt)" or "data engineer, analytics." Searching only the exact title will make the market look smaller than it is.
The wider job market is slow too. US payrolls grew by just 29,000 in September 2026 and unemployment was 4.2% (BLS Employment Situation, released October 2, 2026). The September job openings (JOLTS) report is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. ET on November 3, and the October jobs report for November 6 (BLS JOLTS), so check those numbers before you plan around a "hot" or "cold" market.
What do analytics engineer jobs pay?
Analytics engineering pays close to data engineering, and more than most analyst roles. The figures below are advertised base pay from postings that disclose it. They leave out bonuses and equity.
| Measure | Figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Median posted base, all levels | $164,200 (middle half $137,500 to $195,000; top 10% $245,500+) | Applystead, Nov 3, 2026 |
| Median posted pay, US postings since Oct 18 | $175,000 (157 postings with pay) | Data Pay Index, Nov 2, 2026 |
| Median advertised pay, May to Oct 2026 | $160,000 (middle half $130,000 to $196,000; 144 ads) | Mettlespark, Oct 28, 2026 |
| Average on a job board | About $146,000 (range $75,000 to $230,000) | Teal, Nov 2026 |
Pay by level and location
| Slice | Median posted base | Postings | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mid level | $130,000 | 91 | Applystead |
| Senior | $164,000 | 161 | Applystead |
| Staff | $183,000 | 29 | Applystead |
| 2 to 4 years of experience | $145,000 | 61 | Applystead |
| New York | $183,000 | 56 | Applystead |
| California | $175,000 | 59 | Applystead |
| Remote | $172,000 | 158 | Applystead |
Data Pay Index showed a senior median of $183,000 from 72 postings (Data Pay Index). Applystead's "principal" median of $448,000 is pulled up by a cluster of Netflix postings, so ignore it unless you are targeting that tier. Entry-level samples are tiny (Applystead had only 5 postings with pay for 0 to 1 years), so be skeptical of any single "entry-level analytics engineer salary" number.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics does not track analytics engineers as their own occupation. For context only, the closest broad category it projects strongly is data scientists: median wage $120,230 in May 2025 and projected growth of 35% from 2025 to 2035 (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook). That supports long-run demand for data roles in general, not for this title specifically.

What skills do analytics engineer job postings ask for?
The requirements are more consistent than for most data titles. Here is what two trackers found.
| Skill | Data Pay Index (336 postings, Nov 2) | Mettlespark (263 ads, May to Oct) |
|---|---|---|
| SQL | 92.9% | 92% |
| dbt | 78.3% | not in its top five |
| Python | 68.8% | 73% |
| Data modeling | 56.5% | 70% |
| Data quality | 58.0% | 57% |
| ETL or ELT | 37.2% | 58% |
| Snowflake | 47.6% | |
| Airflow | 41.7% | |
| BigQuery | 39.0% | |
| Semantic layer | 38.7% | |
| Looker or LookML | 37.2% | |
| Git | 32.4% |
Sources: Data Pay Index and Mettlespark. Data Pay Index also found AI agents named in 27.4% of postings and LLMs in 24.4%, a sign that teams want analytics engineers who can make data reliable enough for AI features.
How to show each skill on your resume
| What postings want | Weak bullet | Stronger bullet |
|---|---|---|
| dbt modeling | "Used dbt" | "Built 45 dbt models (staging to marts) for finance, replacing 12 hand-maintained SQL reports" |
| Testing and data quality | "Ensured data quality" | "Added not-null, unique and relationship tests to core models; data incidents reported by finance dropped from weekly to monthly" |
| Semantic layer or metrics | "Defined KPIs" | "Defined one revenue and active-user metric used by 6 teams, ending conflicting dashboard numbers" |
| Warehouse cost | "Worked in Snowflake" | "Converted three full-refresh models to incremental, cutting nightly build time by 40%" |
| Stakeholder work | "Partnered with business" | "Gathered requirements from sales ops and shipped a pipeline-velocity mart in two sprints" |
Use your own real numbers. If you do not have a number, describe the before and after in plain words instead of inventing one.
Experience requirements
Postings that state experience ask for a median of 5 years, and the most common level is mid (44% of ads) (Mettlespark). In practice, employers often count years as an analyst, BI developer or data engineer, not just years with the analytics engineer title. If you have 3 to 4 years of analyst work with real dbt or modeling experience, apply to postings that ask for 4 to 5 years.
Is the dbt certification worth it?
It can help as a keyword and confidence signal. The dbt Analytics Engineering Certification Exam costs $200, and dbt Labs recommends SQL proficiency and at least six months of hands-on dbt experience before taking it (dbt Labs). It covers modeling, tests, governance features like model contracts and versions, debugging and state selection. It does not replace a project you can walk through in an interview.
Is analytics engineering a good career?
"Is analytics engineer a good career" is one of the top Google suggestions for this topic. The honest answer has three parts.
- The pay is strong for the skills required. Posted medians of roughly $160,000 to $175,000 (see the table above) are close to data engineering, with a lower Python and infrastructure bar.
- The title is small, so search wider. At around half a percent of tech job ads, you need to search adjacent titles and apply consistently to find enough openings.
- AI is raising the stakes on data quality. dbt Labs' 2026 survey of 363 data practitioners and leaders found 72% prioritize AI-assisted coding, and 71% worry about hallucinated or incorrect data reaching stakeholders; 41% cited ambiguous data ownership as an ongoing challenge (dbt Labs, 2026 State of Analytics Engineering). AI can draft SQL faster, but someone still has to own whether the numbers are right. That is the analytics engineer's job.
