Quick answer: Data engineer jobs are still plentiful and well paid in late 2026, but most of them want experience. An October 2026 scan of 1,698 live US data engineer postings found a median disclosed pay of $171,000, with only 5.5% of postings open to entry level and half of those that list experience asking for 5+ years (Apiva, October 2026). SQL and Python appeared in more than 70% of postings. To get hired, match the exact stack in each posting (Snowflake, Databricks, dbt, Airflow, a cloud), show pipelines you built and what they changed, and apply early to employers that fit your work authorization.
This guide is for analysts and software engineers moving into data engineering, new grads and OPT students who are not getting callbacks, and experienced data engineers who were laid off or want a better role. If you already know you are in the market and need a resume rewrite first, start with our data engineer resume guide. If you are weighing a neighboring infrastructure role, our cloud engineer jobs and DevOps engineer jobs guides use the same format.
Are data engineer jobs in demand in 2026?
Yes, but the demand is uneven. Several public trackers counted data engineer postings in September and October 2026. They use different sources and filters, so treat each row as a separate snapshot, not one combined number.
| Measure (US) | Figure | Period | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Live data engineer postings on employer career pages | 1,698 (524 first posted in October) | October 2026 | Apiva |
| Open data engineer roles at tracked companies | 689 worldwide, 427 in the US, 58 posted in the last 7 days | October 27, 2026 | Elegy Labs |
| Open US data engineer jobs that publish yearly pay | 783 at 382 employers | October 11, 2026 | Headcount Labs |
| US data engineering postings analyzed since January | 18,786 | January to September 2026 | Axial Search |
The longer trend is the part most "data engineering is booming" articles skip. On Indeed, data and analytics job postings were 40.1% below their February 2020 level and down 10.1% over the year to January 23, 2026 (Indeed Hiring Lab, Q4 2025 tech update). By June 2026, Indeed still described data analysis roles as down roughly 30% or more since February 2020 (Indeed Hiring Lab, June 2026 snapshot). So there are thousands of openings, but fewer than at the 2022 peak, and far more applicants per opening.
The broader market adds to the squeeze. US payrolls grew by only 29,000 in September 2026 and unemployment was 4.2% (BLS Employment Situation, released October 2, 2026). The latest job openings data available today, for August, showed 7.1 million openings and a hires rate of 3.3% (BLS JOLTS). The September JOLTS release is due on November 3 and the October jobs report on November 6, so check those before you plan around these numbers.
Why a posting can get thousands of applicants and still go unfilled
Both things are true at once, and Reddit shows it. In one March 2026 r/dataengineering thread, a job seeker noted a LinkedIn data engineer posting with 3,050 applicants after three days, and hiring managers replied that most applicants did not meet basic requirements (r/dataengineering, March 2026). In a May 2026 thread, a data team manager said each opening drew 200 to 300 applicants in a single day, and that filtering for a specific stack (Databricks, Spark, Airflow, Python) removed most of them (r/dataengineering, May 2026). These are anecdotes, not statistics, but they explain the pattern: a generic resume gets filtered out quickly, and a resume that matches the stack stands out.
What do data engineer jobs pay?
Posted pay is high compared with most tech roles. The figures below are advertised base ranges from employers that disclose pay. They are not total compensation and they leave out bonuses and equity.
| Measure | Figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Median disclosed pay, all levels | $171,000 (middle half $143,000 to $200,000; n = 492) | Apiva, Oct 2026 |
| Median disclosed pay, senior, staff and principal | $184,000 (n = 279) | Apiva, Oct 2026 |
| Median posted range, all levels | $145,000 to $200,000 (305 US postings) | Elegy Labs, Oct 27, 2026 |
| Median posted range by level | Mid-level $135,000 to $175,000; senior $165,000 to $210,000 | Elegy Labs, Oct 27, 2026 |
| Median posted range, all levels | $130,500 to $178,800 (midpoint $153,950; 783 postings) | Headcount Labs, Oct 11, 2026 |
| Median posted salary, all 2026 postings | $155,000 | Axial Search, updated Sept 8, 2026 |
| BLS median wage, database architects (closest federal category) | $139,500 (May 2025) | BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook |
The Bureau of Labor Statistics does not publish a separate "data engineer" occupation. Its closest category, database architects, had a median wage of $139,500 in May 2025 and is projected to grow 9% from 2025 to 2035, while database administrators are projected at 0% (BLS OOH). That split matches what postings show: building data platforms is growing, while pure database maintenance is not.
Entry-level pay is harder to pin down because so few entry-level postings list a salary. Elegy Labs showed a median entry-level range of $85,000 to $105,000, but from only nine postings, and Apiva declined to publish an entry-level band because only 25 postings stated one. Treat any single "entry-level data engineer salary" figure with caution.
Pay by state

Who is hiring data engineers right now?
Hiring is spread across consultancies, banks, big tech and defense contractors. Here is what two trackers showed in October 2026.
| Signal | What it showed | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Most open roles at tracked companies | Capco (35), Accenture (26), Agile Defense (17), Brillio (13), CGS Federal (12), SpaceX (10) | Elegy Labs, Oct 27 |
| Most postings that publish pay | Apple (37, median midpoint $214,000), Capital One (24, $211,200), Amazon (23, $155,450) | Headcount Labs, Oct 11 |
| Top metros | San Francisco Bay Area (105), New York City (59), Washington, DC (55) | Elegy Labs, Oct 27 |
| Top states, 2026 to date | California 15%, Texas 12%, New York 10% | Axial Search |
| Who posts | 35% from companies with 10,000+ employees; IT services 26%, technology 19% | Axial Search |
| Recent momentum | Texas postings up from 33 to 68 and Virginia from 56 to 82 in the 28 days to Oct 28; Illinois down from 48 to 26 | Mogi, Oct 28 |
Three practical lanes come out of this:
- Consulting and IT services. Firms like Capco, Accenture and Brillio hire in volume and often staff client projects. Good for getting experience on modern stacks quickly, but check whether the role is tied to a single client contract.
- Banks and large enterprises. Capital One, Apple and Amazon post many roles with pay listed. Expect structured interviews with SQL, Python and system design rounds.
- Federal and defense. Washington, DC and Virginia show strong demand from contractors such as Agile Defense and CGS Federal. Many of these roles require US citizenship or a clearance, so visa holders should filter them out early.
Not sure your resume shows the stack recruiters filter for? Run it through the free ATS resume score checker against a real data engineer posting, then use find jobs from your resume to see which current openings match your experience.
Are data engineer jobs remote?
Some are, but most are not fully remote. Of 2026 postings that stated a work model, 48% were hybrid, 29% fully remote and 22% on-site (Axial Search). Elegy Labs found a similar share, 29% of its US data engineer listings (125 of 427), marked remote in October (Elegy Labs).
Remote postings also draw the largest applicant pools. If you only apply to remote roles, you are competing with the whole country. Adding hybrid roles within commuting distance usually improves your interview rate more than any resume tweak.
What skills do data engineer job postings ask for?
The core is consistent across trackers. SQL appeared in 74.1% of postings Apiva read, Python in 72.2% and ETL in 43.9% (Apiva). Axial Search found SQL in 69%, cloud platforms in 65% and Python in 65% (Axial Search). Beyond that core, hiring managers on Reddit repeatedly name Snowflake, Databricks, dbt, Airflow and Spark as the tools they screen for.
| Layer | What postings ask for | How to show it on your resume |
|---|---|---|
| Core | SQL, Python, ETL or ELT | Name the volume and the result: "Rebuilt 40 nightly SQL jobs, cut runtime from 3 hours to 35 minutes" |
| Warehouse or lakehouse | Snowflake, Databricks, BigQuery, Redshift | List the exact platform, plus one migration or cost result |
| Orchestration and transformation | Airflow, dbt, Dagster | Mention how many pipelines or models you owned and how failures were handled |
| Processing | Spark, Kafka or other streaming | Give scale: rows, events per second, or data size |
| Cloud | AWS, Azure or GCP | Match the cloud named in the posting; do not list all three equally if you have only used one |
| Quality and reliability | Testing, data contracts, observability | Show fewer incidents, faster recovery, or trusted dashboards |
Experience requirements
Among postings that state a number, half ask for 5+ years, and the middle half sit between 4 and 7 years (Apiva). Apiva's seniority split for the full October set was: no level in title 40.4%, senior 32.5%, lead 6.2%, staff 5.5%, manager 4.3%, internship 3.2%, principal 3.1%, director or above 2.5%, and entry level or junior 2.2%.
A stated minimum is a filter, not a law. If you have 3 to 4 years and match the stack closely, apply to postings that ask for 4 to 5 years. Skip ones that ask for 7+ unless you have a very close match.
Do certifications help?
They help most when they match the platform in the posting. Two common options are the AWS Certified Data Engineer Associate, which costs $150 (AWS), and the Databricks Certified Data Engineer Associate, which costs $200 (Databricks). Neither replaces a project you can explain in an interview. Treat a certification as a keyword and a confidence signal, not as proof of experience.
