Career Change Job Search: Applying When You Don't Have the Title Yet

The single biggest mistake career changers make is submitting a resume that reads as the professional they were, not the professional they are trying to become. ATS systems score resumes based on keyword match to the job description — and a teacher's resume submitted to a product manager role will score near zero if the experience is not actively translated into product and stakeholder management vocabulary.

Career changers must solve two problems simultaneously: ATS keyword matching (requiring specific resume language) and hiring manager legitimacy (requiring evidence of capability in the new domain). Both require careful, role-specific tailoring — not a generic "transferable skills" overview.
