Career GlossaryAt-Will Employment
Career Definition
What is At-Will Employment?
An employment arrangement where either the employer or employee can terminate the relationship at any time, for any legal reason, with or without notice.
In-Depth Definition
At-will employment is the default in 49 US states (Montana is the exception). It means your employer can terminate you at any time without cause, and you can resign at any time without consequence.
Important exceptions include: you cannot be fired for discriminatory reasons (race, gender, age, religion), whistleblowing, exercising legal rights, or violating the terms of an employment contract.
Why At-Will Employment Matters in 2026
Understanding at-will employment sets realistic expectations about job security. It also underscores why maintaining an updated resume and professional network is an always-on priority.
