The average tech layoff in 2025-2026 affected employees who had been at their company for 3+ years. Many had never job searched in a modern market.

Before You Apply: The First 72 Hours

Negotiate Your Severance

Severance packages are negotiable more often than HR tells you:

  • Do not sign anything immediately — you have 21-45 days
  • Negotiate for: extended health coverage, longer severance period, removal of non-compete clauses, accelerated equity vesting

File for Unemployment Immediately

File within the first week — processing takes 2-4 weeks and benefits are not retroactive to your layoff date.

Update LinkedIn Before Anything Else

Update your headline, about section, and enable Open to Work (recruiter-only mode) before updating your resume.

Week 1: Build Your Foundation

Your Narrative

"The company went through a restructuring that eliminated [X%] of the [department]. It was a business decision unrelated to performance. I'm now focused on finding a [target role] where I can [specific value you'll bring]."

Activate Your Network

Message 20-30 people this week: "Hey [Name] — I wanted to reach out to let you know I'm starting a new chapter after [Company] went through a restructuring. I'm targeting [role type] roles in [industry]. If you know anyone I should talk to, I'd really appreciate an introduction."

Week 2: Launch Active Applications

Goal: 20-30 applications, with 10 being highly targeted (custom resume + cover letter) and 10-20 being efficient (tailored resume).

Contact 10 external recruiters who specialize in your field: "I'm a [role] with [X years] in [specialty] currently exploring opportunities after a company restructuring. Are you working on any relevant searches?"

Week 3: Optimize and Accelerate

Analyze your data: which job titles are getting responses, which company sizes respond, whether your skills match what they're asking for in interviews. Adjust targeting based on real feedback.

Start interview preparation now — practice "tell me about yourself" and prepare 8-10 STAR stories.

Week 4: Close the Loop

A well-run search by day 30: 80-100 applications sent, 5-10 recruiter calls, 2-5 hiring manager interviews, 1-2 advanced stage conversations.

If those numbers are lower: resume not passing ATS (test it at ATS Checker), job titles mismatched to your background, or network not activated.

The Mental Health Component

Layoffs trigger real grief for income, identity, routine, and community. Give yourself 3-5 days to process before going into full search mode. The most effective job searchers run a structured, sustainable process — not a panic sprint.
